Younis Khan was always known as a gentleman both on the field and off the field. For many years he was the mainstay of the Pakistani test side. He is the only Pakistani batsman to score more than 10 thousand runs in Test cricket. He was awarded with this prize money for his tremendous service for the national side.
Younis Khan was very humbled with this honor and expressed his gratitude for the acclamation. But in a self recorded video he announced that he will donate the entire prize money to various charity organizations.
He said,“I am thankful to the Prime Minister for the cash reward; I will donate it to Edhi Foundation, Indus Hospital and The Citizens Foundation.”
He also requested the government to not charge him any tax on the prize money, so that the charity foundations could gain maximum benefit from the donation.
The Pakistan government has awarded every player in the triumphant ICC Champions Trophy side with Rs 10 million. Pakistan’s chief selector Inzamam-Ul-Haq received similar cash prize like the players, while other selectors received Rs 1 million each. The coaching staff of Michael Arthur, Gran Trafford, Azhar Mahmood and Grant Flower also received checks of half a million.
However, the Pakistan government has received some backlash over splurging public money and awarding the already well looked after players with such a hefty amount.
